About Shubunkin's

Shubunkin's also known as Red Brocade or Harlequin Goldfish is a popular Cold fresh water fish known for its bright and unique colours. Belonging to the Cyprinidae Family.

Originating in Japan. 

Features;

Approx. Size; 5-6"/12-15cm.

Origin; Japan.

Family; Cyprinidae. 

Temperament; Friendly and Peaceful.

Lighting; Low ( to much light can cause issues to their scales.)

Water Conditions.

Ideal PH; 6.5-7.4.

Ideal Temperature; 18-22°C.

Ideal Waterflow; Moderate.

Ease of Care.

Shubunkin's are very nice and easy to look after due to their peaceful and friendly nature. They get on with most species of standard goldfish which makes this nice and easy for beginners.

Diet.

Shubunkin's like a variety of diffrent foods due to being omnivores. This can include high quality fish food designed for Shubunkin's.  Live foods such as bloodworm brine shrimp and daphnia. As well as things like Peas and Cucumber as these provide fibers and vitamins.

Compatibility.

The best tankmates for Shubunkin's are other peaceful fish. It is best to stay away from mixing fancy and regular Goldfish. So best to stick with other peaceful regular Goldfish and to definitely stay away from tropical species.  

Breeding/Sex.

The best way to to try and tell the difference is that males will have more slender elongated bodies whereas females have more rounded silhouetted bodies especially around the bellies. 

Lifespan. 

With the right care and water conditions Shubunkin Goldfish can live up to 10-15 years. In some cases they can live longer but on average it is up to 15 years.
