Heating Guidelines
What is a Ceramic Heat Emitter?
Ceramic heat lamps/emitters produce long wave infrared heat which penetrates scales, and tissues thoroughly heating your reptile. Suitable for 24 Hour use, they are ideal for constant radiant heat to simulate desert or tropical environments. Energy efficient ceramics retain heat and stay hot for longer than glass which loses heat very quickly. Always use a thermostat with these bulbs as they can reach extreme temperatures. If there is any chance of the animal coming into contact with the bulb it is essential to place a guard around it.
Do I Need a Thermometer?
Monitoring of temperature is vitally important and every enclosure should have some variety of thermometer (such as Komodo analogue or digital thermometers) included within the set up. It is always very important to provide a thermal gradient for reptiles, i.e a cooler area to retreat from the basking zone.
What Wattage Bulb Do I Need?
The wattage of bulb needed is influenced by different factors, such as the size of the enclosure to be heated and the heat requirements of the reptile. The higher the wattage of the bulb the greater amount of heat the bulb will produce. If used in a large enclosure, a 150w basking bulb may be the appropriate choice. If using a smaller enclosure we would use a smaller bulb.
Which bulb do I use?
Knowledge of your reptile is essential. As a basic rule, if your reptile is active during the day and naturally spends time basking in direct sunlight, establishing a well lit environment is incredibly important. For these animals we would normally choose the Komodo Basking Spot, Daylight Spot or Halogen Bulb to product a basking spot and increase air temperature.
Ceramic bulbs are suitable for reptiles that require heat 24 hours a day as they provide heat without emitting light which does not disturb normal photo periods (day/night cycle). Ceramic heaters can also be a good option where heat mats are not appropriate - for example with large animals that may cause thermal blocking, or because the reptile needs a higher ambient temperature.
